Maybugs, an independent gift shop chain catering for men, women and children, has been crowned the UK’s best small high street business at this year’s Small Awards. The family-owned, Sussex-based retailer won the High Street Hero Award sponsored by TSB. Presenting the owners with their award was writer, actor and comedian, Sue Perkins.
Since 2018, owners John Dale and Greg Rose have grown Maybugs with two further stores. An opening in Eastbourne in 2021, and also Bexhill-On-Sea in 2022. Maybugs impressed the judges with its focus on supporting the local community as well as collaborating with other small businesses.
Maybugs is an example of a small retailer breathing new life into the British high street.
The Small Awards is a nationwide search for the smallest, greatest firms in the UK across all sectors. Taking place annually, it is organised by Small Business Britain, which both champions and accelerates the nation’s 5.5 million small firms.

It is wonderful to be recognised for playing a part in this in the communities that we serve.
