The founders of clothes-swapping platform Swoperz, where kids are empowered to make their own sustainable fashion choices, have created a unique Swoperz book for the second annual UK National Read-Aloud Challenge.
First held in 2023, this free nationwide initiative encourages children aged five to 15 to read aloud during their summer break using the award-winning Fonetti app. The aim is to build children’s confidence when reading aloud, develop their speech and comprehension skills, and enhance their vocabulary.
Like Fonetti and the UK National Read-Aloud Challenge, Swoperz aims to empower children to discover their own style and make sustainable fashion choices with minimal adult supervision. The age-verified platform enables kids aged six to 16 to swap pre-loved clothes with other children, earning tokens with each swap, while grown-ups manage the admin.
Commenting are Charlene Hurlock and Vicky Fuller, co-founders of Swoperz.
“We are thrilled to have contributed a story for the UK National Read-Aloud Challenge, the first of four Swoperz books. Our story explores how Leigh-on-Sea best friends Sophia and Pretti’s love of swapping clothes and a school lesson about landfill leads them to put on a ‘Swoperz’ fashion show. Reading is a brilliant way to learn about new ideas, so what better way to get across Swoperz’s message about empowerment and the benefits of sustainable fashion to the next generation of consumers.”
Kim Antoniou, founder and CEO of Auris Tech, the creators of Fonetti, adds: “Through initiatives like the UK National Read-Aloud Challenge, we can inspire a love of reading while introducing concepts like sustainability and personal responsibility. Swoperz stories show kids the fun and impact of making eco-friendly choices and expressing individuality.”
