Ambessa Play, the social enterprise making science education practical, joyful and accessible, is launching its first product: a DIY Flashlight designed to get children building, experimenting and learning through play.
Created for curious kids, the DIY Flashlight turns STEM learning into something children can hold, use and feel proud of. As they build their own working flashlight, children develop real-world skills including problem-solving, lateral thinking, fine motor skills and scientific understanding, all while enjoying interactive, hands-on play.

For parents, it’s also an easy win: a bonding activity you can do together at the kitchen table, and a practical finished product children will actually want to use, from camping trips and holidays to bedtime adventures, den-building, and as an ideal gift for birthdays and special occasions.
However, Ambessa Play’s mission goes beyond learning at home.
For every DIY Flashlight purchased, Ambessa donates a kit to a displaced, out-of-school child who lacks consistent access to electricity, helping bring hands-on learning to children who need it most. With over 250 million children currently out of school and 40 million displaced globally, Ambessa is connecting play with purpose and giving more children the chance to learn by doing.

“We believe every child deserves the chance to learn, make and dream, no matter their circumstances,” said Sara Berkai, founder and CEO of Ambessa Play. “The DIY Flashlight is designed to build confidence through making and to create a moment of connection between parent and child. When play becomes practical, children realise they can build things that matter.”
Ambessa Play’s DIY Flashlight is the first in a series of hands-on products, with more DIY kits set to launch in the coming months. The DIY Flashlight is available in two versions: light blue and transparent. Suitable for children aged eight years and upwards, the kit includes everything needed to build a kinetic flashlight from scratch.
