This season, CWB visited the Babykid Spain + FIMI trade fair in Valencia, Spain. Here are our highlights.

 

Taking place annually at the end of January, international trade fair Babykid Spain + FIMI brings together a wide selection of baby and children’s clothes, furniture, accessories, toys and baby products. Guiding the show’s fourth edition were the themes of sustainability, design, trends and innovation.

Showcasing a mix of international brands, with 20 countries represented amongst the 400 companies, Babykid Spain + FIMI also presented a strong footwear presence and live runway presentations. We took the opportunity to focus on Spanish brands during our visit, catching up with both established names as well as discovering some new additions to the show.

Revolution – by PAZ Rodríguez

This season saw PAZ Rodríguez introduce its new Revolution line (pictured above). Whilst sharing the same high-quality we expect from this established Spanish company, the mood is very different, with a sporty, casual collection for ages 2-12 years. Taking inspiration from concepts such as art and literature, the launch has two looks – Matisse and Klee – which interpret the artists’ colour palettes and brushstrokes in a fun, contemporary way. We love the relaxed unisex denim and outerwear pieces with coordinating accessories. PAZ Rodríguez has been designing and manufacturing children’s fashion with a focus on artisanal detail and fine fabrics since 1970. The collections of baby and children’s clothing and childcare accessories are timeless in feel, updated with new colours, prints and knits. With a global presence, the brand is available in stores such as El Corte Inglés and Harrods.

Boboli

Since launching in Barcelona in 1981, Boboli has been known for its colourful childrenswear. With several collections a season spanning 0-16 years, its ethos remains practicality, comfort, fashion and heritage. Using soft, resistant and durable fabrics, Boboli is aware of its environmental responsibilities, acting accordingly to reduce its impact. Short-term goals include using sustainable processes. This is alongside organic cotton and fabrics made from recycled bottles – Boboli is certified with the Oeko-Tex and BSCI seals. While still working on challenges such as B Corp status and getting to 50% sustainable materials in its manufacturing, this season Boboli introduces a capsule of gender-neutral, recycled cotton sweatshirts and fleece jackets. For a/w 24, influences for prints and graphics include 80s graffiti, hip-hop culture, and skateboarding. There are also college-style badge prints, biker motifs and alpine coordinates. Plus, bohemian-inspired patchwork prints, spots and naïve florals. Silhouettes are relaxed with a retro college feel, with bomber jackets, corduroy flares and teddy fleece gilets. As always, knitwear is a central part of the collections. We love the statement furry motif knits.

Tutto Piccolo

A family company, Tutto Piccolo was founded in 1982 by Mercedes Moltó and her husband Desiderio Mataix. Leading the company today are their children, who have helped evolve the Tutto Piccolo brand. With its headquarters located near Alicante in Spain, the company has a strong national and international presence both in stores and online. With several collections covering 0-12 years, looks range from casual to party and confirmation, combining classic style together with the latest fashion trends, fabrics and colours. Catching our eye was the girlswear collection with its autumnal colour palette, delicate floral print dresses layered with embroidered knits, quilted floral jackets, gingham and denim. However, the most exciting launch for a/w 24 is the limited-edition Tutto Natural, the brand’s contribution to producing more responsibly. Garments feature local fabrics and are made in European workshops. Taking inspiration from nature and with a bohemian style, it offers ‘slow fashion for the little ones.’

North Baby

Designed in Galicia and ‘slow made’ in Portugal, North Baby is a Spanish brand for babies founded in 2019 by Beatriz and Rubén. North Baby’s purpose is to make garments to care for and protect the most sensitive skin. To improve its approach towards the end consumer, it has a community, #tendercollabs, which allows it to closely follow the real experiences of mothers with their babies as well as how its clothes evolve. North Baby’s commitment to its local area and the environment is also key. In its factory, located just 250km away in Portugal, it uses both organic cotton and recycled materials to last multiple lifecycles. All North Baby recycled labelling and packaging are produced locally too. The brand makes small, controlled productions prioritising quality and taking time to design and make each garment. We love the cute packaging for the baby essentials items.

Coco au Lait

Catching our eye with its boho feel and coordinated collection of unique fabrics and prints was Coco au Lait. A first-time exhibitor at Babykid Spain + FIMI, the brand had a busy stand and lots of interest. Launched in 2015, Coco au Lait’s mantra is to fuse Latin colours and embroideries inspired by the founder’s home country of Mexico with European design and premium materials, including 100% organic cotton double gauze and yarn and locally produced knit and fleece from Barcelona. Working with suppliers in Mataró and Sabadell in Spain, Coco au Lait ensures production is as local as possible. Its prints, dyed with GOTS Certification, also come from a Barcelona fabric house with local production. Knits, meanwhile, are crafted in Sabadell using organic cotton yarn from Italy. Coco au Lait also produces a small but important part of the collection in Peru, with handmade crochet details. The a/w 24 collection, The Wild, is a story about freedom, roots, the feeling of belonging, and connecting with nature. Key prints feature apples, horses and wild nature alongside details inspired by cowboys and cowgirls. Traditional craftsmanship has a modern twist: a plaid print on a quilt; a traditional quilt made into a knit; organic printed twills; geometrical jacquard fabrics; floral embroideries, and handmade crochet details.

Belan Kids Couture

With collections for babies aged 0-36 months as well as girls and boys aged 3-12 years, Belan’s focus is creating children’s fashion with a strong sense of craftsmanship that aligns with its clients’ values. In addition to some casual items, there are also special occasion pieces for baptisms, communions and parties. Founded in 1989, its headquarters are in Zaragoza in the northeastern part of Spain, home to generations of expert artisans in the clothing industry. For more than 30 years, the brand has built a sustainable and local supply chain, assuming the responsibility of passing on experience to young people in the community. A/w 24 pieces include pinafores and rompers in baby cord as well as tartan check dresses. Delicate watercolour floral and fruit prints in an autumnal palette are also key. We love the contrast collars and yokes with trims, including cotton lace, ribbons and pom poms.

Pisamonas

Pisamonas is a family company founded in 2013 by two married couples who were unable to find shoes on the Spanish market that ticked all their boxes of quality and design at a great price. It has since become one of the leading Spanish brands in the sector, operating in countries including the UK, France, Italy, China and Portugal. Pisamonas relies on 100% Spanish production. Working with the best artisans and factories, it takes advantage of the latest technology to blend the current needs of children with the traditions of shoemaking. One of its main aims is to marry together past, present and future. It pairs the latest trends with the quality of traditional Spanish footwear, updating boat shoes, moccasins, Oxfords or desert boots with a wide variety of colours and materials. For a/w 24, velvet takes the spotlight. It adorns Mary Janes, sneakers and boots, complemented by suede, fabric or washable leather details. We love the classic girls’ styles updated in a myriad of rich hues with interesting ribbon fastenings for a playful touch.

Metepatas Kids

Babykid Spain + FIMI marked the Tenerife brand Metepatas Kids’ first trade show. The brand’s colourful, genderless designs made a bold statement at its stand as well as on the catwalk. The products accompany children in their growth, with multi-sizing that grows with the child and lasts a couple of years. The current range caters from babies up to approximately eight years. With original, seasonless prints, the collection will also grow over time. Metepatas Kids uses high-quality, eco-sustainable 80% recycled polyester 20% elastane. It also offers UV 50+ sun protection and antibacterial properties. Prints, meanwhile, are sublimated with ecological water-based inks. We love the bold graphic stripe design with a checkerboard cut hem.

Walking Mum

With 20 years’ experience in the baby world, Pasito a Pasito is a leading Spanish company specializing in equipment for newborns. It has now launched a new brand of bags, accessories, covers, sleeping bags and baby seat covers. Meeting a need for more urban, practical and modern products, the Walking Mum collections are designed in Spain while taking inspiration from Northern European trends. Combining the know-how of the existing team with the latest developments in the sector, the brand’s values are exclusive design and quality. Focus is on the comfort of babies and the satisfaction of parents, with accessories that make life easier. Walking Mum and Pasito a Pasito are registered trademarks of Diset, S.A., a Barcelona-based manufacturer of educational toys and games. The coordinated collection of bags and accessories features a minimal palette of sage green, oatmeal and ochre. We love both the seasonless and genderless feel of this collection.

Banwood

Banwood is a family-owned lifestyle brand that creates high-end cycling products for children. The founders, Juan Manuel Torralvo Castro and Frida Jonsby, met in Germany. There they discovered Frida’s eye for design and Juan’s family history of manufacturing made a great match. Banwood’s contemporary designs reflect Scandinavian style. Keywords throughout the creative process are simplicity, minimalism and functionality. The bicycles feature both rustic and durable materials: the frame is steel; the handlebar is aluminium; the saddle and grips are high-end faux leather, and the detachable wicker basket is rattan. The range has expanded to include tricycles, scooters, skateboards and accessories, all with a touch of mid-century charm. We love the brand’s simple design and colour palette.
