Bigjigs Toys is celebrating 40 years in the toy-making business with a look back at its journey of dedication, perseverance and family values. To mark the milestone, the brand will be expanding its collection with over 100 new products launching throughout its anniversary year.
Founded in 1985 by husband-and-wife duo Peter and Liz Ireland, Bigjigs Toys began as a side project. While working as teachers, the Irelands spent their spare time handcrafting wooden puzzles in their garden shed and selling them at markets and fairs across the country. In the early days, every penny earned was poured into the business.

“We didn’t have much,” recalls Liz Ireland, founder and MD of Bigjigs Toys. “For years, Peter and I slept on a mattress on the floor and our sons Sam and Tom slept in the bottom of our chest of drawers. It was hard work, but we believed in what we were doing and were driven by a love of making toys and the joy they brought to children.”
Sons Sam and Tom joined Bigjigs Toys after graduating from university, bringing in fresh ideas and a shared commitment to continuing the family legacy. Sam Ireland, now operations director of Bigjigs Toys, reflects on his experience. “Growing up alongside the business made me appreciate the effort and care that went into every toy we made. Mum and Dad worked tirelessly over the years to make Bigjigs what it is today, and it’s incredible to think about how far we’ve come.”
