Oxford-based unisex clothing brand, Ducky Zebra, has a new partnership with Borro, a baby clothing rental service. The collaboration enables parents and carers to rent baby clothes for as little as £2.50 a month.

With the rising cost of living and the increasing pressure to reduce carbon footprint, this move makes Ducky Zebra’s sustainable clothes more accessible to more people. Plus, it also extends the lifecycle of the clothing.

Ducky Zebra, founded by Sally Dear, and Borro, founded by Sarah Green, were both launched in 2021.

Sally Dear left her 15-year career in marketing after growing frustrated with the ‘cute, meek and pink’ or ‘adventurous, aggressive and blue’ stereotypes she encountered when buying clothes for her kids.

After doing more research, she discovered she wasn’t alone. Over 80% of parents and carers she spoke to wanted to buy unisex clothing to avoid gender stereotypes. Ducky Zebra, therefore, creates colourful, sustainable clothes that are free from these stereotypes. The collection caters for babies and kids up to 6 years, and for every garment bought, the brand donates £1 to charity.

Meanwhile, after Sarah Green had her first child, she watched the pile of outgrown baby clothes mount. She struggled to find time to sort, donate, resell or recycle them. Looking for a solution to this problem, she launched a rental service.

Borro allows parents and carers to rent their baby clothes (0-12 months) for as little as £1 a month. The company offers clothes from a range of high quality, sustainable brands, including Kite, Pigeon Organics and Mori. Ducky Zebra is the latest addition to the line-up.

Both Sally and Sarah are mums of two, and their partnership offers an innovative solution to several issues.

These include the rising cost of living and the damaging effect of gender stereotypes in the early years. Also, the negative impact of the fashion industry on the world around us. The fashion sector accounts for around 10% of global carbon emissions and nearly 20% of wastewater. Plus, it’s responsible for an estimated 350,000 tonnes of clothing that ends up in UK landfill every year.

“At Ducky Zebra, we use certified organic cotton to reduce our environmental impact,” says Dear. “We also include features like roll-up/roll-down cuffs so that our clothes can grow with the child and are creative with how we manage our waste – including upcycling and a practically perfect programme.

“But there’s always more that we can do. And so, we’re delighted to partner with Borro, allowing us to extend the lifecycle of our clothes and make them more accessible to more people through its rental programme. It’s an exciting next phase of our journey.”

Green adds; “At Borro, we only stock organic, ethically made brands and are always looking to bring new exciting clothes to our customers, which is why Ducky Zebra is perfect for us.

“By renting rather than buying clothes, Borro allows parents to have the best sustainable brands without the hassle of what to do with them after. Bringing Ducky Zebra’s unique and colourful unisex range to Borro makes it easy for parents to dress their baby without stereotypes and be sustainable as well.”
