This season, CWB visited the FIMI trade fair in Valencia, Spain. The summer edition of FIMI is always a smaller event than the winter edition, which is held alongside the Babykid Spain babycare show. Summer focuses on the beach, communion and special occasions, alongside casual clothes and footwear. We noticed a new interest in collections for older children, with Mayoral, Canada House and El Pulpo all debuting new teen capsules. Additionally, there were runway shows featuring a wide range of brands including Abel & Lula, Mayoral, Boston Brand, Canada House, Montero y Cabaña, Newness, Javilar and Eve Children. Here are our brand highlights.

Mac Ilusión

Started as a family business over 50 years ago, Mac Ilusión (pictured above) specialises in baby knitwear. With an in-house design team and an artisanal perspective, the company strives to incorporate the latest technology into its production processes. The Tiny Glow baby line features garments in natural fabrics such as cotton, which gently care for skin while adapting to the changing seasons, alongside pastel tones, floral prints and delicate details. The Mini Mooi collection is designed with sustainability in mind. Each garment is intended to support environmentally friendly practices and encourage conscious, ethical consumption. A key material in the collection is Infinity #END1, a premium-quality synthetic yarn, certified GRS, made from recycled waste generated during the textile chain. It uses fewer resources than traditional methods while maintaining the original quality of the virgin product. We love the brand’s variety of collections and use of sustainable materials.

Swim Essentials

It was also a pleasure to visit some international exhibitors at FIMI, including the well-established Dutch brand Swim Essentials. Swim Essentials is recognised for its distinctive products including inflatables, children’s textiles and pool accessories, seen at beaches, swimming pools and holiday destinations across Europe. The swimwear line is produced in the brand’s studio in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. From concept to final product, everything takes place under one roof. This enables the brand to carefully coordinate every detail and respond quickly to new trends and developments. Each design is not only beautiful but practical and user-friendly, embodying the signature Swim Essentials style. Alongside its collections, the brand also offers licensed ranges and can develop bespoke designs for your store via its private label option. UK customers include John Lewis. We love the s/s 26 crab motif for the capsule collection of products and swimwear.

Boston Kids

Since Boston opened its first store in Madrid in 1945, it has steadily expanded as a chain. In June 2021, Mayoral stepped in to develop a strong retail network and reposition the brand within the market by redesigning its collections, image, digital presence and store concept. Launching for s/s 26, Boston Kids is the first children’s collection for boys from 4-14 years. Drawing on the spirit of the men’s brand, the spontaneous, versatile and colourful pieces strike a perfect balance between design and practicality, turning everyday wear into something special. Relaxed and oversized fits, pastel colours and graphic designs with neon accents are some of the key features of the first collection. Our favourite pieces are the washed canvas jacket with contrast collar, the faded oversized resort shirt with abstract print, and also the seaweed-print swim shorts.

Atlanta Mocassin

Proudly designed and handmade in Portugal since 1987, Atlanta Mocassin is a second-generation, family-owned business. Based in Porto, it supports traditional footwear workshops in Portugal. Passionate about simplicity and timeless design, the brand’s moccasin shoes feature premium materials and unique details, and are available in a variety of seasonal colourways. Alongside the classics, Atlanta Mocassin is increasingly launching fashion-forward styles and prints inspired by travel and fashion trends. It adopts a responsible approach to sourcing materials, with many products made to order, helping to reduce excess inventory and factory waste. Many items are available from the adults’ collection through to the kids’ collection, and there are also first walkers in sizes 19-24. The s/s 26 collection highlights include eye-catching graphic and seaside-inspired prints in colour-blocked mix-and-match designs, laser-cut-out patterns, and our favourite – a T-bar buckle style.

Play Up

One of our favourite ethical brands, with sustainability at the core of everything it does, Play Up from Portugal is in its 5th chapter of the Embracing Slow Making series. For s/s 26, it unveils Sculptural Waste, taking inspiration from the work of artist Margarida Lopes Pereira: a poetic reflection on the ability to breathe new life into discarded items. All Play Up items include symbols and labels that communicate certifications, raw materials and finishes to allow a deeper understanding of each item’s identity and the values it embodies. The collection features GOTS and GRS certification, Re (Play) yarn created using production waste, low-impact 100% cotton denim, and natural and recycled fibres throughout. Several items are also designed for circularity and recyclability. We love the way Play Up combines design, craft and ethics alongside unique hand-drawn prints and a natural yet colourful palette.

Bidi Baby

Bidi Baby is a Spanish brand based in Madrid that specialises in premium play mats, ponchos and complementary baby accessories. Co-founders Cristina and Alejandra, who design the unique prints for the play mats, bibs and pacifier holders, started the brand when they realised how important it was to have a waterproof play mat to keep their babies dry and comfortable, so they made the first two Bidis for their own use. Bidi Baby was born from their own experience of motherhood and initially offered padded, waterproof play mats for both indoor and outdoor use. More recently, they have introduced ponchos for bath and beach use for children aged 6 months to 4 years. We love the check and print muslin backed with contrasting towelling for a contemporary feel.
