A group of children measuring the width of a large tree trunk as part of the Green Tree Badge initiative

The Green Tree Badge is a nationwide initiative to encourage 1 million children to participate with their families, community groups or schools to learn more about the world of trees. The aim is to deepen understanding of the value of trees and forestry, and the part they play in the battle against Climate Change.

Created by educational charity The Royal Forestry Society and environmentally conscious brand Bags of Ethics, the Green Tree Badge gives children the opportunity to discover different types of trees, learn how they grow, find out how they benefit wildlife, and explore the different uses of timber.

The activities are suitable to carry out in a garden, park or the countryside. Examples include measuring the height of a tall tree, building a tree den, planting a bee-friendly plant, and making leaf art using different types of leaves.

Businesses can sign up for free and either buy or donate activity passbooks for a school or charity of their choice.

The passbook has four themes – growing tall, shelter, food, and trees & me – with six activities to choose from in each theme. Each child must complete two activities from each theme. Once completed and recorded on the online portal by an adult, the participant will receive a Green Tree Badge.

There is also a Gold Award challenge with separate activities requiring more action. Gold candidates will be assessed by a judging panel and will be eligible for selection to take part in exclusive events and award ceremonies.

Activations for the Green Tree Badge will take place across the country, with ceremonies for children taking place in castles, arboretums and national gardens. Organisations supporting and partnering with Green Tree Badge include The Scouts, Severn Trent Water and Hamptons.
