In our series of interviews with independent childrenswear retailers on the reopening of their stores, Sara Palmer, owner of Molly’s Cotton Tails in Alcester, shares her experience.

Laura Turner: Were you able to trade online during lockdown?

Sara Palmer: Yes, we were able to trade online. It was tough balancing small children, a working husband, and finding time to focus on the business, but thankfully we did OK. We saw higher demand from local customers for our zero waste, as I was making the deliveries during lockdown.

LT: What measures did you put in place before reopening?

SP: We have changed our shop layout and restricted the number of people in the store at any one time. We have hand sanitisers, floor markings and a plastic screen on the counter. I was pleased to be able to support small and local businesses to purchase the sanitiser dispenser and screen.

LT: How was your first week back trading?

SP: Amazing! I have seen such support from our local community. Our online community has also shown its support for my small business; I couldn’t have asked for more. I am aware that we are still in such uncertain times, but I have really appreciated such a positive start.

LT: How are you finding the practice of social distancing in-store?

SP: We are finding all of our customers are adhering to the rules we have put in place and are happy to do so. However, we do have appointments available for anyone who is not yet comfortable to be out shopping. We have received lots of compliments about how we have set up the shop and also how safe an experience shopping with us is.

LT: Do you plan to do any buying this season?

SP: Yes, we have been taking top-ups of current season during lockdown and have also taken on new brands. We are now looking towards SS21 buying, which will be happening in the coming weeks.

LT: How have you been promoting the reopening of your store?

SP: Businesses have been working to promote each other on local social media channels. We have also been extensively promoted on our own social media pages and in relevant groups. We have found that our customers like that they have been kept updated on our progress.
