Pip & Henry is a new children’s footwear brand offering a sustainable alternative, with responsibly made, durable and stylish shoes. Available in four different designs and a variety of colours, the range features 80% environmentally friendly materials. The shoes also have a zip up the side, ensuring they are easy to put on with minimal fuss.
The upper and lining are made from organic cotton. The panels, meanwhile, are a natural textile made from waste pineapple leaf fibre, which has the look and feel of leather. The sole is made from recycled Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR) which is lightweight, strong, and weather and slip resistant. The shoes also leave room to move and grow, so little feet can develop naturally as opposed to conforming to the shape of a shoe.
Pip & Henry produces in small batches to avoid mass production and wasting shoes that will never be needed. Currently offering a select range of sizes, the brand plans to grow once it learns more about what its customers need; a more expensive but responsible manufacturing choice.
The designs
Delicately designed in coral and white, Pip & Henry’s clover patterned trainers are chic and fashionable. Based on the brand’s main character, Henry, there is also a dinosaur pattern. Elsewhere, a magical and mystical cat print provides Pip & Henry’s most uniquely designed shoes. Finally, there is a fun pattern of rockets, planets, moons and stars. All prints are available in the colour options of Mulberry or Marine.
Storytime
As well as shoes, Pip & Henry founder and mum of one, Jeroo Doodhmal, has written a children’s storybook. In this first story, Pip & Henry learn that when people throw out their old shoes, they end up in landfills, leaching horrible chemicals into the ground and causing the forests and animals around them all sorts of pain. Can they think of a less polluting solution?
The eco-friendly brand has thought of every detail when it comes to being environmentally sound. Even the packaging, including the shoeboxes and inside stuffing of shoes, use 100% recyclable material. Plus, if you don’t want to recycle right away, the shoeboxes double up as a children’s game.
Shoe recycling service
As part of its commitment to environmentally friendly and sustainable production, Pip & Henry offers a free and easy-to-use shoe recycling service for all shoes. In return, the customer gets £10 off their next Pip & Henry order. The old shoes go to a partner company, which will responsibly strip them into their component parts and repurpose them for different uses. For example, as playground surfaces and floor fillers.
Commenting is Pip & Henry founder, Jeroo Doodhmal. “We are so excited to launch our range of sustainably made children’s footwear for the very first time. Eighty per cent of the materials used in our shoes are environmentally sustainable. We are extremely proud of this statistic; it is one of the highest in the children’s footwear industry. We are committed to making 100% of our materials sustainable through supplier partnerships as we grow.
“With other things in place, like our storybook to help inspire children through their imagination and our shoe recycling service, we aim to do as much as we can to help reduce the impact on shoes ending up in landfill and create a cleaner world for our children.”
