Three children stood in a river looking into the water wearing Kidunk outerwear

CWB’s pick of stylish and practical kids’ outerwear to support children getting outdoors, whatever the weather.

Kidunk

Designed for the British weather, Kidunk Eco Suits (pictured above) are the only ‘all-in-two’ kids’ waterproofs. Offering an award-winning zip-together top and bottom concept patented and unique to the brand, the Kidunk jacket and trousers can either be worn separately or zipped together to make a waterproof all-in-one puddle suit. This simple adaptability gives the Eco Suit triple the functionality – a school coat, puddle-proof trousers and a snowsuit – one set of outdoor wear to cover all eventualities. The Eco Suit is made from 100% recycled materials and coated with PFC-free EcoElite. The durable, colourful fabric is stretchy, comfortable and lined with soft fleece for warmth. Available in four nature-inspired colourways – fellside, plum, forest and ink – each Eco Suit also has contrasting chunky YKK zips. Reflecting Kidunk’s commitment to slow fashion, the longevity of wear and its love of the environment, the brand’s circular design begins with materials and continues through and after use. Once the clothing has been outgrown, passed down, outgrown again, and a family has no further use for it, Kidunk will take it back and redistribute it to outdoor learning programmes and charitable foundations through its Replay scheme. Little Lighthouse

The Amelia and Lucas coats by Little Lighthouse are both insulated and waterproof to ensure children stay snug and dry. Whether it is blustery walks to nursery or school, or seaside picnics sprayed with showers, the soft fleece lining and insulated padding combine to provide warmth, whilst wind and waterproofing enable complete protection from the elements. Key features of the waterproof (3000mm), breathable (3000gsm) and windproof coats include fully taped seams, a polyester microfibre peach finished outer fabric, soft fleece lining, 30g insulated padding and two front pockets. The coats are also machine washable. Buyers can view Little Lighthouse’s a/w 23 collection, which includes new colours and prints for the Amelia and Lucas coats, at this month’s INDX Kids trade show.

Hatley

Hatley’s PVC-free raingear collection is made to be passed down from sibling to sibling, which is why the brand includes space for three names on its labels. Items are fully lined to keep children both warm and dry, and each raincoat is available with matching rainboots and umbrellas, some of which are also colour-changing.
Waterproof splash pants are available in some designs alongside sherpa-lined and microfibre raincoats and rain bundlers in the infant sizes. Hatley’s rainwear is available in sizes 9-12 months up to 12 years. Don’t miss the brand’s moon and snow boots, which are new to the collection for a/w 23, available in the choice of red, blue and sparkly gold.

Gosoaky

Amsterdam-based Gosoaky produces intelligent, fashion-conscious rainproof outerwear for kids. All of the brand’s OUTERPROOFS™ are handmade with great attention to detail, and each Gosoaky garment is either waterproof or water repellent, with taped or sealed seams, technical details and materials. Merging innovative design, fashion and classic silhouettes, Gosoaky garments are free from both animal products and harmful chemicals and leave as little waste as possible. The brand is also helping to close the loop to make sure its items don’t end up in landfills by expanding their lifecycle. Customers can register their Gosoaky by scanning the smiley icon found on each garment. When the pre-loved garment is passed on, it can be registered by the new owner and the former wearer will receive fun perks. Gosoaky also offers a snowwear capsule, which has a waterproof coating on the inside of the materials making all the items breathable and the perfect kids’ ski jackets. Although this capsule was made for the slopes, it can also be worn every day

Muddy Puddles

Established over 20 years ago, Muddy Puddles embarked on a mission to connect growing explorers with nature by designing high-quality, sustainable clothing that protects children in all weather and is kind to the planet and the people who make it. New for a/w 23, The Antarctic Collection marks and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the first British explorers, led by Captain James Cook to sail below the Antarctic circle in 1773. It encompasses a range of prints including Antarctic Birds, Explorer Hats, Tents, Shooting Stars & Ice Crystals, and its signature Lightning Bolt. The colour palette takes inspiration from the Pantone colour of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, and includes a mid-pink called Mauvewood, a dark burgundy and an orange called Puffins Bill. Muddy Puddles began using recycled fabrics more than five years ago with the launch of the Eco Splash collection and has remained committed to this journey, constantly looking to evolve. All of its 10,000mm waterproof outerwear is now made from GRS-certified recycled fabrics with the Bionic-Finish® Eco, a fluorine-free waterproof coating. Each garment is designed with active children in mind: zips are yank proof and heavy-duty to encourage independence; sizing is roomy to enable movement; legs are secured with stirrups to prevent water getting in, and hoods are full for guaranteed rain protection. Muddy Puddles works with a handful of carefully selected suppliers with a track record of ethics and environmental production practices that are regularly checked through SMETA and Amfori/BSCI reports
