Interior of the Mya Rose childrenswear store showing children's clothes hung on a rail on the wall

Ashlee Spyve left school at 16 years old and, unsure of her career path, tried various roles to help her choose a vocation. It was whilst working at a small business − a fudge and ice cream shop in her then-local town in the Cotswolds – Spyve realised she wanted her own shop.

She moved back to where she grew up in East Yorkshire and found a shop in Hull located in a newly renovated Victorian shopping arcade. Inspired by and named after her baby sister, Mya Rose, Spyve − aged just 17 at the time − opened her childrenswear boutique in February.

Mya Rose stocks clothing, shoes and accessories for premature up to age 8 years.

Spyve tries to sell only British brands and favours simple, stylish, good-quality garments without characters or slogans. She also places focus on organic and ethical products and is keen to maintain affordable prices, especially amid the cost of living crisis.

One of the store’s biggest collections is Little Green Radicals alongside Pigeon Organics and Grass & Air. Other key brands include Pebblechild, which offers handmade, certified fair trade children’s toys, and BIBS dummies. Spyve is also working with a UK company that hand-makes clothing and hair accessories to order, enabling her to choose both the styles and fabrics to create bespoke outfits for boys and girls.

Spyve has lots of ideas and aspirations for the business but is currently focusing on growing and perfecting the store’s brand portfolio. By listening to customer feedback, she is working hard to ensure Mya Rose’s offer continues to meet customers’ needs. One example of this following frequent requests is trialling a small selection of adults’ clothing in keeping with the aesthetic of the childrenswear.
