The government is backing a private member’s bill introduced by Labour MP Mike Amesbury to accelerate making the DfE uniform guidelines statutory.

The legislation could see uniform becoming almost completely generic, leaving the market open to the supermarkets. It therefore has the potential to hugely damage, if not destroy, the school-specific industry.

Statutory guidelines are already in place in Wales

The Schoolwear Association (SA) has been working hard to prepare for the process of making the guidelines statutory. However, the latest turn of events will now accelerate and possibly shorten that process as SA chairman David Burgess explains.

“Now is the time we must all stand together. We must ensure that the key decision-makers in this process understand the whole picture and also the fantastic work that all parts of the supply chain does, every year, to ensure that children go to school in a proper uniform. They need to know the true costs and the many benefits.

“When we say ‘stand together’, that means standing with the Schoolwear Association. Making your voice heard effectively, in the right places, by the right people. If you are not yet an SA member, now is the time to join us and make 200+ into 500+ voices.”
