Karen O’Brien, owner of Taffy Tots Clothing, is gearing up to launch her autumn 2023 collection of handmade children’s clothing and accessories following a record-breaking year of sales, despite the current cost of living crisis.

O’Brien attributes the surge in sales to a shift in attitudes towards climate change and increased interest in slow, sustainable clothing for babies and children that will stand the test of time.

“All Taffy Tots Clothing is made with children and their families in mind,” says O’Brien. “I am always looking for ways to make the clothing I produce more sustainable and durable to help families preserve and reuse the clothing for future children and generations to come.”

Mum to three boys, O’Brien set up Taffy Tots Clothing after identifying a gap in the market for clothes that are both stylish and sustainable and don’t follow the stereotypical gender norms of blue for boys and pink for girls.

“I could never find fun clothes for my boys as they were growing up,” continues O’Brien. “My options were constantly limited to checked shirts, jeans and khaki or navy tops with cartoons on them, which I found so boring. The quality on the high street always let me down too. I knew I couldn’t be alone.”

Taffy Tots Clothing offers a variety of colours and patterns for children who want to stand out and showcase their personalities.

The autumn collection comprises rompers, dresses, tops, bubble suits, leggings, trousers and accessories for 0-6 years. There are four prints available, two of which are brand new and designed by O’Brien herself from her home studio in Banchory, Aberdeenshire.

“The collection has very much been inspired by my customers and their tots who embrace the fun and whimsical when it comes to style and children’s clothing,” concludes O’Brien. “Particularly my new Rainbow Dragons and Spaceman collection, which I can’t wait to see tots across the country rocking very soon.”
