The Reclaimery’s focus is to bring a circular economy into apparel while providing local, disadvantaged community members with free training and employment opportunities.

The initiative concentrates on extending the life of garments – including children’s clothing – by repurposing, upcycling or tailoring; using what already exists as the most effective way to save natural resources and protect the environment.

The Reclaimery’s training provides a key introduction to the world of clothing manufacturing, giving individuals valuable skills to pursue a career within the industry as well as potential employment opportunities with The Reclaimery.

“We have created this training programme as unemployment is at an all-time high and disadvantaged communities need support,” says The Reclaimery founder, Juliet Herrera.

“We are striving to help disadvantaged individuals on their path to becoming self-sufficient. During the programme, we teach our Reclaimers (our training participants) how to sew and repurpose garments by hand and machine.”

The People and Planet First Crowdfunder UK campaign aims to raise £5,000 to support further training for disadvantaged communities.

With each pledge, The Reclaimery can run its next programme to up-skill many more individuals from disadvantaged communities. Also, develop new hand-sewn embroidery patches that will provide fair paid job opportunities.

After training, fair-paid London living wage job opportunities are offered based on the project work performed by The Reclaimery, which works with both clothing brands and individuals striving to act more circular.

The Reclaimery takes existing pieces or old collections and transforms them into new repurposed items. Or, it works with brands as part of amnesty projects taking donated, end of life items and repurposing the materials into something for those in need.

Herrera concludes; “Our focus is not on making new products, but re-using what we already have; protecting the environment and up-skilling disadvantaged individuals here in London. Each piece of clothing becomes a one of a kind; crafted with care, extending its life versus entering a landfill as waste.”
