Colour trends

Industry expert Fiona Coleman selects five important colour trends for s/s 23.

Oceanic Blues

The importance of oceanic biodiversity with regard to sustainability is an important area for research. Explore the otherworldly depths of the ocean and become submerged in a palette of deep, sea-inspired blues and blue/greens. In contrast, tranquil blue has the lightness and meditative quality of shallow, rippling water. Pair it with white and neutrals for a unisex shade across all categories.

Sun-Kissed

Yellows and oranges continue to evolve and have featured strongly in recent seasons. Warming shades of primrose, sunbaked orange and flame allow us to feel the heat of high summer when toned with hot pink. Ombré – where merged and blurred shades of similar colour values vibrate in a soft glow − evokes a sense of energy and optimism.

Natural Pigments

Low-impact and circular sources of colour from plants and food waste are being explored on a more commercial level. Organic, naturally derived colours will remain important as consumers understand more and reconnect with the countryside. This is a palette of chalky, mid-toned greens and warm neutrals that will appeal across ages and genders.

Whitened Brights

Adjusted colours embrace artificiality and invigorate floral themes hovering between pastels and brights to create a new dimension. Uplifting when used together in harmony or paired with neutral shades. An obvious choice for summer prints and party, jersey, resort and swimwear, and more adventurous for unisex casualwear, footwear and accessories.

Meta-Hues

We are looking at an expanded virtual world enabling new forms of self-expression and creating an intensity that shapes the future. Joyous levels and combinations of colours are transformative, making an impact in both the digital and physical realms. Vibrant fluorescent shades of pink and yellow are joined by playful turquoise and lime green.
