Maped Helix has launched the Oxford Vision Maths Set developed especially to support the needs of children with vision impairment. The new maths set has been designed alongside experts and in conjunction with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), which has endorsed the product with its Tried and Tested Accreditation.
The set includes a self-centring metal compass with a safety point, a graphite pencil for use in the compass, a PVC and phthalate free eraser, a pencil sharpener with an anti-tamper screw, a ruler, 45° and 60° set squares, a 180° protractor, and also a lettering stencil. All items have been created in a high contrasting black and yellow design to make each item easier to read.
Following guidance from experts, other details include large print graduations on the ruler, set squares and protractor, as well as all markings/numbers being raised by 0.5mm to match braille specifications. There are also lines of different lengths denoting 5mm and 10mm and notches at every 5mm on the side of the tools to make them easier to use.
Commenting is Gray Richmond, MD at Maped Helix.
“How can we have a commitment to empower all children if those with a visual impairment, of which there are 25,000 (under 16) in the UK, are struggling to use the maths equipment we make? We began our research and development immediately and were delighted to be able to work with RNIB to ensure the product we made would truly help.
“Aware of the attainment gap between children with vision impairment and their sighted peers, and the impact on wellbeing of not being able to fully access learning, we truly hope our product can help to overcome barriers to equitable access to education.”
Nicola Cornwell, Head of Business Services at RNIB, adds: “We are delighted to give Maped Helix’s maths set RNIB’s Tried and Tested accreditation. This product will make a huge difference to the lives of children with vision impairment, allowing them to have independence in the classroom and giving them access to the same opportunities as their sighted peers.”
The maths set comes in an embossed tin and is sold in plastic-free packaging featuring recycled card with braille markings. For further information on Maped Helix, please click here.
