Plastic-free toy brand Yummikeys sees over 400% increase in sales

In its second full year of trading, eco-friendly toy company Yummikeys has seen a 403% sales increase YoY from 2018 to 2019.

Selling just under 1,990 toys in 2018, the company saw a purchasing boom in 2019. Thanks to a mixture of sustained social media outreach, press coverage and influencer networking, the brand has reached its target of selling 10,000 products.

Yummikeys offers a plastic-free, long-lasting alternative to the ‘throw-away’ toy industry.

The company manufactures high-quality, stainless-steel keys, rings and feeding necklaces to a target market of discerning parents who are looking to reduce their plastic consumption.

All products are washable, cutlery grade steel, and BPA-, lead-, cadmium- and phthalate-free. They’re also 100% recyclable and independently safety tested.

Last year saw over 8,000 products sold directly from the website and 2,000 from independent stockists.

Of those pieces, 3,500 were engraved with names, dates and other memorable phrases, suggesting that the demand for personalisation is not yet done.

Commenting is Elspeth Fawcett, founder of Yummikeys. “With over a third of our sales last year requesting engraving, I think it shows that people are turning away from the throwaway society we live in. Instead they are investing in pieces that can be cherished for longer.

“Not only that, it seems to be that millennials are buying into small, independent businesses more than ever before; meaning a brand like Yummikeys is no longer a ‘side-project’.

“There really is a care factor here of ‘what am I giving to my children?’, ‘where did it come from?’ and ‘how will it impact the world we live in?’ I’m proud to be a part of this change and thank my customers for joining me on this journey.”

Yummikeys projects a target of 40,000 products sold in 2020.

“The 10,000 sales of Yummikeys in 2019 is the equivalent to 600kg of plastic toys bought elsewhere,” concludes Fawcett. “If that isn’t the key to a successful business, healthy earth and a happy baby, I don’t know what is?”
