Two young children in a room playing with Stapelstein stepping stones

Bouncing, balancing, seesawing, building and climbing: Stapelstein brings movement and creativity into children’s everyday lives, transforming any room into an adventure playground. Stapelstein, which means ‘stacking stones’ in German, is a versatile set of elements requiring little space.

They are simultaneously bowls, ad-hoc seats and step stools for little ones (as well as footstools for adults), offering limitless possibilities. Lightweight and fully recyclable, they are suitable to use indoors, outdoors and even in water.

Stapelstein was born out of a need to satisfy children’s natural urge to move.

On talking to educators, creators and partners, Stephan Schenk and Hannah König came to realise that movement, despite being key to the holistic healthy development of children, is gradually disappearing from everyday life. But movement requires space, which is often lacking. Most toys are cumbersome, can only be used in a singular way and quickly lose their novelty factor.

“We wanted to design a sustainable product that encourages children to play intuitively, to move while doing so and to become creative,” says Stephan Schenk of the climate-neutral product.

Stapelstein’s design is simple and timeless, with sets in attractive rainbow hues.

“I tried to see and think like a child and leave as much (play) space as possible for their own imagination through minimalist design,” continues Schenk. “Children decide intuitively and from the situation what they want to play with Stapelstein next.”

The lightweight yet robust material opens up many options even for the youngest children. Rolling, stacking, balancing, sorting or transporting are just a few of them. Each component is climate-neutral, pollutant-free and produced using lightweight EPP (expanded polypropylene). One Stapelstein weighs just 180 grams but can hold 180 kilograms.
