Stepping aside from discounting, Childrensalon is pledging to donate £100,000 to two charities, Sistah Space and African Promise. Childrensalon’s pledge follows its charitable commitment last year, where 20% of its total Black Friday sales were donated to two chosen charities. In place of Black Friday, Sistah Space and African Promise have been chosen by Childrensalon to receive vital funding from this year’s charitable initiative.

Sistah Space

There is an unspoken epidemic of domestic abuse within the African, Caribbean and greater grassroots communities. Community-based charity Sistah Space bridges the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls. It provides a safe cultural venue for survivors to confidentially disclose abuse. It also equips them with the support they need to report it. Plus, it offers practical help to those in need by providing hygiene products and other essentials.

Committed to big changes, Sistah Space is also behind Valerie’s Law; a petition to make specialist culturally appropriate training mandatory for all police and other government agencies that support black women and girls affected by domestic abuse. With support from Goodwork Agency and celebrities such as FKA Twigs and Lewis Hamilton, the petition received over 106,000 signatures. Most importantly, it will now be discussed by the UK parliament.

African Promise

Small but ambitious, African Promise works to improve the quality and provision of primary education in rural Kenya. African Promise rebuilds, extends and upgrades existing schools in the isolated Kasigau region of south-east Kenya. It currently supports eight schools, serving 3,000 disadvantaged children. The charity aims to ensure the schools are fully equipped to deliver quality education. It does this by improving learning environments. It also removes barriers to education, including poor hygiene and lack of food and water.

In partnership with Childrensalon, these 3,000 primary school children will now receive a lunchtime meal every day for the next two years. Childrensalon’s donation will allow the charity to cater for 625,000 meals; fully extending its ‘Feeding Minds’ school lunch programme, which has provided more than 3 million meals since launching in September 2013.

One of Childrensalon’s longstanding values is to give back and do good in the world. It proudly supports the important work that charities like Sistah Space and African Promise do for families and individuals; both locally and across the world, particularly as they navigate through and beyond this global pandemic.

Commenting is Asher Harriman-Smith, co-CEO at Childrensalon.

“We deeply believe in the causes that Sistah Space and African Promise champion and upon getting to know them, have been so impressed by the level of life-changing impact they deliver to the communities they support. The size of these small but passionate charities belies just how much they’re already achieving. We feel proud we can help elevate their work and hopefully draw continued awareness to them, so the support they receive grows.”

By focusing on giving again this year – rather than discounting for Black Friday – Childrensalon vows to help those truly in need with £100,000 donated and divided equally between the two charities. Click here for further information.
