For 2020, parenting brand Close is continuing its journey towards increased sustainability and lower impact materials that are better for the planet. Highlights include the launch of innovative fabrics and materials across the brand’s Pop-in range of reusable cloth nappies.

The 2020 Pop-in collections use a new low impact fabric made from RPET (recycled plastic bottles). In fact, each Pop-in nappy uses two and a half plastic bottles. The first products launched with the new RPET material are Pop-in Nappy boxes in new on-trend bright and pastel colours.

The next phase of Close’s 2020 swaps towards sustainability is the launch of a bio TPU laminate, another first for Pop-in.

The new laminate allows a reduction in non-renewable resources needed to make each nappy; approximately 20-30% of the TPU material comes from a renewable plant-based source.

It starts as corn, then via a fermentation process the glucose from corn starch becomes a bio component. This can reduce the amount of petroleum used. TPU is already a ‘lower impact’ plastic, but the whole process of using bio-based materials in the mix offers significant environmental benefits.

Close has been using materials derived from bamboo in its nappies for more than 12 years. It has also been using corn starch for its nappy liners and packaging for nearly as long. The latest developments follow Close’s rollout of recycled polyester earlier this year.
